Pillar Analysis
Strategic Assessment
Strategic Vector
Cosma is positioning itself as a deeptech seabed intelligence provider, using swarms of autonomous underwater drones and AI to target both environmental monitoring and dual-use defense applications.
Efficiency Ratio
Given a very small team and recent funding, Cosma appears to convert limited resources into a relatively mature product-service offering and early commercial projects efficiently.
Evidence Signals
Cosma announced a €2.5 million funding round co-led by Wind and Ternel, with support from 50 Partners, to industrialise its fleet of autonomous underwater drones and scale its seabed imaging and biodiversity monitoring platform.
French outlet FrenchWeb reported that the Nice-based startup Cosma completed a €2.5 million fundraising round to industrialise its autonomous subsea mapping technology based on swarms of underwater drones and AI.
Cosma documented an environmental impact assessment project in Port Grimaud, France, where its underwater drones executed a two-step protocol over 6.5 hectares, including sparse mapping and a detailed georeferenced photogrammetric reconstruction of habitats such as Posidonia oceanica meadows.
A Cosma LinkedIn post described a mission in Grimaud where project manager Christophe Giltat mobilised underwater drones to perform sparse transects and complete coverage over more than 3 hectares of seabed with Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea meadows.
Cosma presented its Photographic Seabed Model (PSM) service, combining continuous, geo-referenced photographic acquisition by underwater drones flying 1.5 m above the seabed with cloud processing to reconstruct habitats and benthic species for environmental studies.
Cosma was listed in the BlueInvest project pipeline describing its swarm underwater drone and AI seabed mapping technology as dual-use, highlighting UXO and mine clearance as well as seabed warfare applications in addition to environmental and resource management use cases.
An abstract attributed to Cosma at the OOS2025 conference outlined its approach of deploying several synchronized autonomous underwater drones combined with AI to enable large-scale, continuous, high-precision seabed mapping and monitoring down to depths of 200 meters.
- About
- Cosma is a French startup building scalable autonomous underwater drone swarms with an AI processing platform, applied to seabed mapping, unexploded-ordnance detection and seabed awareness. Its stated markets span offshore energy, marine conservation and civil or military end users. Seabed awareness and UXO survey sit directly against NATO's current concern with undersea cable and pipeline protection.
- Relevancy
- French startup, autonomous underwater drone swarms for seabed mapping incl. UXO detection and 'security' applications; directly adjacent to the EDTF domain (autonomy, sensing), no explicit military customer evidenced. Classified C10-01 — C05 has no maritime child, DON routes USV/UUV to C10-01. C12-06 EOD rejected: UXO mapping is survey, not render-safe.
